Miners liberate what few natural resources Pern has from the depths of her crust.
Miners carve out and excavate mineshafts, searching for metals, gems, minerals, and coal. Miners
also have to reinforce their mines to prevent them from caving in, and have to be wary of pockets of
gas, often relying on Firelizards for early warning. Miners make use of many tools to get at their
prizes, but very few explosives.
Miners also perform stonework and masonry, often working on various construction projects. As miners dig gems out from the ground, they are often gemcutters as well, shaping the gems into forms for metalsmith brethren to set them in gold or silver. Not all miners spend their lives underground! |
Woodsmiths tend to the Pernese forests, a rather new development in raw materials on
Pern. And a very flexible one, at that. Wood is used for everything from furniture to musical
instruments to, though only recently, housing. The Woodcrafters harvest the trees, produce the
direct wood products and lumber, then shape and join wood into finished goods. Wooden construction is, of course, rare, as thread devours wood products as easily as human flesh. Paper is very rare, very expensive, and available in very small quantities, and only to the leading Craftmasters, Lord Holders, and Weyrleaders. It is, however, produced by the few woodsmiths who specialize in its fabrication. |
Starsmiths are the Pernese astronomers, studding the sky, stars, and other planetary bodies. Starsmiths study weather patterns, map star charts, track the red star, and study Pern's two moons: Timor and Belior. As a result, they have a great interest in creating and improving distance viewers, working closely with metalsmiths and glasssmiths to provide the best tools available. Starsmiths provide the Seacraft with a great deal of assistance, through both farviewers and starcharts, allowing sailors to navigate using the night sky.
The Starcraft of Pern is much like regular Astronomy on Earth. The basis of the craft is Observation and discovering new stars, information, and other celestial bodies. The charters of the stars and watches of the skies, the StarSmiths plot, chart, and map the motions of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies in the heavens. They are extremely knowledgable in optics and mathmatics.
There are Seven Subcrafts of the Starcraft on PernWorld Mush. They are...
Observation- This subcraft charts skies and celestial bodies. The examine and discover new formations and celestial bodies.
Weather- This subcraft studies the weather patterns and predicts the weather of the planet.
Math- This subcraft studies the celestial mechanics and the equations and distances from bodies in space. They also plot the courses of celestial bodies.
Theory- This subcraft studies the formation of celestial bodies and other related objects. On earth, the theory subcrafters would be the ones studying the Big Bang and how the world was created.
Physics- This subcraft studies the Whys of the universe and astronomy. Crafters in this subcraft study the science of physics and celestial mechanics.
Glass/Metal- This subcraft builds and constructs far viewers and other types of telescopes and microscopes. They also make the materials needed for the viewers.
General Astronomy- Crafters in this subcraft dabble a bit in every subcraft. They could be a journeyman in each field but instead of choosing one, they choose them all.
Solar System-This subcraft studies the planets, the solar system, and other systems.

Glasssmiths produce all of Pern's glass, ceramics, and porcelain. They produce
everything from flasks and goblets to pitchers and windowpanes. Leaded glass is used for fine
crystal wine goblets, and lenses for distance viewers. Taking advantage of the fine sands found
across the Southern Continent, the glasssmiths keep the populace supplied with basic apprentice-made
goods as well as finer centerpieces. Various minerals are also used to tint glass various colors, for example the cobalt often used for the popular harper blue. Although stained-glass windows are available, they are very difficult to produce, and are quite rare. |
